Les Gould was a young Tool Engineer when he travelled to Detroit in 1946 as a member of the General Motors - Holden's Australian Car Project Team. His brief was to study engine manufacture across manufacturing plants in the United States and Canada. His assiduously prepared journals of detailed notes, drawings and charts are reproduced in this book as high quality facsimiles with accompanying transcriptions and additional historical information.

On return to Australia it was Les's task to set up the Fishermans Bend Plant for the production of engines for the first Australian-made car, "Australia's Own Car", the Holden.
